Why Us

Edmonton's Custom Pergola Builder

Shade, Style and Structure Done Right

A pergola changes what your backyard is capable of. It turns an exposed deck into a space you actually want to sit in during a July afternoon. It gives your yard a focal point, a sense of enclosure and a reason to stay outside longer. Done right, it also adds real value to your home.

At Deck Daddy, we design and build custom pergolas for Edmonton homeowners who want more than a basic kit-set structure sitting on a slab. We build pergolas that are sized for your space, matched to your style and installed to handle everything a Western Canadian climate throws at them.

We serve Edmonton and the surrounding area, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Leduc.

What a Pergola Actually Does for Your Outdoor Space

People think of pergolas as decorative, and they can certainly be that. But the best ones earn their place by being genuinely useful. Here's what a well-built pergola gives you:

Defined space. A pergola creates an outdoor "room" without walls, giving your deck or patio a sense of purpose and enclosure that an open slab just doesn't have.

Shade and comfort. Edmonton summers are short, but they're intense. A pergola with fixed or adjustable roof slats lets you control how much sun gets through, making your outdoor space usable through the hottest part of the day.

Architectural interest. A pergola adds height, structure and visual appeal to your backyard. It changes the way your property looks from inside the house and from the street.

Flexibility to grow. Pergolas are a strong base for add-ons. Lighting, fans, retractable screens, climbing plants, outdoor curtains — all of these integrate well once you have the structure in place.

A return on your investment. A quality pergola, properly built and finished, is a meaningful upgrade to your property. It extends your usable living space and adds to your home's appeal.

Built to Your Spec

No Two Builds Are the Same

Off-the-shelf pergolas exist, and they're fine for what they are. But if your deck has an unusual shape, your yard has a challenging layout, or you simply want something that looks like it belongs rather than like it was dropped in from a catalogue, a custom build is the right call.

As a custom pergola builder in Edmonton, we start every project by understanding the site and the homeowner's goals. How do you use your outdoor space? How much direct sun do you get? Do you want the pergola attached to your house or freestanding? Will it sit on an existing deck or go directly on grade? What materials suit your home's exterior?

From there, we design a structure that answers those questions and put together a clear quote before any work begins.

How to Build a Pergola on a Deck — What's Actually Involved

A lot of Edmonton homeowners start with a deck and decide later they want a pergola over part or all of it. That's a very common project for us, and it works well when it's done correctly.

What "Correctly" Actually Means

Building a pergola on a deck is not just a matter of bolting posts to the surface. The deck structure below needs to be assessed first. If the existing deck framing was not built to carry the added load of a pergola, it may need to be reinforced before the pergola can go up. This is not always required, but it needs to be checked.

The posts need to be anchored properly. The typical approach involves post bases bolted through the decking into the structural framing below. The depth and placement of those anchors depends on the pergola's size, weight and whether it has a closed or open roof system.

The beam-to-post and rafter-to-beam connections need to be engineered for wind uplift, which matters more than many people realize in Edmonton's climate. A pergola that isn't properly braced can shift or fail in a high-wind event.

Finally, the roof system — whether it's open slats, a louvred panel system or something more enclosed — affects the entire load calculation and may change the permit requirements.

We handle all of this as part of a standard project. If you're considering adding a pergola to an existing deck and you're not sure whether your current structure can support it, that's exactly the kind of question we answer during our site visit.

Build a Deck With a Pergola — Getting Both Right From the Start

If you're planning a new deck and already know you want a pergola over it, build them together. It's more efficient, it looks better and it's often more cost-effective than doing them in separate phases.

When we design a deck and pergola as a single project, we can:

  • Ensure the deck framing is built to carry the pergola load from the beginning, with no retrofitting required
  • Position the deck posts and pergola posts in a coordinated layout so the whole structure looks intentional
  • Run any electrical rough-in for lighting or fans through the framing before the decking surface goes down, keeping things clean and concealed
  • Choose materials across both elements that complement each other

The result is a backyard setup that feels designed, not assembled in stages. If a deck and pergola are both on your list, let's plan them together from the first conversation.

Do I Need a Permit for a Pergola in Edmonton?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends on the specifics of your project.

Here is how the City of Edmonton's rules generally work, based on current guidelines:

Freestanding Pergolas

A freestanding pergola that is not attached to your house, has no enclosed walls or enclosed roof, and stands less than 4.3 metres (about 14 feet) in height generally does not require a permit from the City of Edmonton, provided it falls under 10 square metres (about 108 square feet) in area. Larger freestanding structures or those that exceed height or location criteria will require an accessory building permit

Attached Pergolas

A pergola attached to your home is treated as a home addition under Edmonton's rules and requires both a development permit and a building permit. If the pergola includes a louvred roof system that can open and close, or any roof structure capable of holding snow loads, an engineer's review and stamped drawings may also be required.

Pergolas on a Deck

If you're adding a pergola to an existing deck but the pergola is freestanding (posts anchored to the deck framing, not attached to the house wall), the permit situation depends on the pergola's size and configuration. If the pergola is attached to the house at one end, it falls under the home addition rules above.

Electrical, Gas or Other Trades Work

If your pergola project includes lighting wiring, a gas line for a heater or any other trades work, those components require their own trade permits regardless of whether the structure itself needs a building permit.

What We Recommend

Every property is different, and Edmonton's zoning rules can vary by area and lot configuration. We strongly recommend confirming your specific permit requirements with the City of Edmonton's Development Services before any work begins. As your pergola builder, we handle the permit applications for projects that require them. You don't need to navigate that process on your own.

Materials and Build Options

Not every project calls for the same material, and good deck building in Edmonton starts with honest advice about what fits your situation. Here's how we think about it:

Timber and Wood

Wood pergolas have a warmth and natural character that suits a wide range of home styles. We use quality treated lumber for structural elements, with finishing options that can be stained or painted to complement your home's exterior.

Aluminum

For homeowners who want a sleek, modern look with minimal ongoing maintenance, aluminum pergola systems are an excellent choice. Aluminum holds up exceptionally well in Edmonton's climate, does not rot, warp or require refinishing, and is available in a range of powder-coat colours.

Mixed Materials

Combining timber posts with metal beams and roofing elements, or vice versa, gives you a hybrid aesthetic that suits contemporary home styles particularly well. We work with both materials and can advise on combinations that perform well and look sharp.

Roof Systems

Open slatted roof — The classic pergola look. Provides partial shade and allows airflow. Great for growing climbing plants or hanging lighting.

Louvred (adjustable) roof — Panels that rotate to control shade and airflow. More complex to install and often requires a permit review in Edmonton, but gives you the most flexibility in how you use the space.

Fixed solid roof panels — For maximum rain protection. Moves closer to a covered patio or sunroom category, which affects permit requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a permit for a pergola in Edmonton?

It depends on the size, placement and configuration of your pergola. Freestanding pergolas under 10 square metres and under 4.3 metres in height generally do not require a permit. Attached pergolas are treated as home additions and require both a development permit and a building permit. Louvred or enclosed roof systems may also trigger an engineer's review. We help you sort this out as part of your project planning.

  • How much does a custom pergola cost in Edmonton?

The cost depends on the size, materials, roof system and any add-ons like lighting or screens. We provide a clear, detailed quote after our site visit so you know exactly what you're paying before anything begins.

  • Can you build a pergola on my existing deck?

Yes, in most cases. We assess the existing deck structure during our site visit to confirm it can carry the added load. If reinforcement is needed, we'll include that in the project scope and quote.

  • Is it better to build a deck and pergola at the same time?

If both are on your list, yes. Combining the projects lets us engineer the deck framing to support the pergola from the start, coordinate the layout of posts, and run electrical rough-in cleanly through the framing before the decking goes down.

  • How long does it take to build a pergola in Edmonton?

A typical pergola build takes one to a few weeks once permits are in place and materials are on order. We'll give you a realistic timeline as part of your quote.

  • What's the difference between a freestanding and attached pergola?

A freestanding pergola stands on its own posts independent of your house. An attached pergola is connected to the house structure, typically along one beam. Attached pergolas are treated differently under Edmonton's permit rules and require a development and building permit.

  • Do you handle the City of Edmonton permit application?

Yes. For projects that require permits, we manage the application process. You don't need to deal with the City directly if you'd rather not.

  • Can you add lighting or heating to a pergola?

Yes. We can integrate lighting, fans and heaters into the pergola structure. Electrical and gas work requires trade permits, which we factor into the project plan.

  • Do you build pergolas in Sherwood Park and St. Albert?

Yes. We serve Edmonton and the surrounding communities including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Leduc.

  • What materials do you use for pergolas?

We build with timber, aluminum and mixed-material combinations depending on the project. For roof systems, we offer open slatted, louvred (adjustable) and fixed options.
